The story of ‘Adam and Eve’ makes me sick. No really it is awful. This is a story that I was raised on, told over and over. You’ll notice even in the title of the story ‘Adam and Eve’ Adam is named first. That name placement is so key to this story, it’s key to the foundation of the religion the story represents, and it’s a key representation of the society in which I grew up. Let’s break this story open verse by verse.
When God created man he created him from the dust of the earth. God himself breathed life into man’s nostrils and then there was Adam. God planted beautiful trees, rivers, and a beautiful garden for Adam to enjoy and take care of. Giving him one restriction, no eating from the tree of knowledge or you will die. Soon enough the lord decided it wasn’t good for the man to be alone. Just as before, as god did with Adam, he created animals out of the ground. Then God brought them to Adam for him to name “and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.”
So animals came before Eve and Adam got to name them all. Cool. TELL ME MORE!!!!
As far as Adam was concerned none of the animals were suitable helpers.
“Helpers” you guys. “HELPERS”
“So the lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.” (Phew. Good thing he repaired poor Adam.) “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”
Let’s re-read that shall we?
“Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”
So Eve came from Adam’s rib. Adam came from the earth first, then animals (also from the earth), and then Eve came from a part of Adam. Clear? Clear. Cool. Also let’s talk real quick about the last half of that last sentence shall we? “and he brought her to the man.” Even God is giving women to men. How can we expect men to know we are not a thing you can gift or be gifted when the “God that created them” gave us to them?
The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
CALLED WOMAN BECAUSE SHE WAS TAKEN OUT OF MAN.
“Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”
Just look at that wording… “Adam and his wife” GERRRRR! (at least nobody felt shame.)
Now let’s just kind of jump ahead here some… we all know the serpent talked to the Eve and she decided to eat the apple and convinced her husband to do so too.
What a conniving cunt. Poor Adam he didn’t know any better see…
The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
If I was god I think my response would have been something like this:
Suzee God- “Mother fucker, first of all you asked for her so don’t give me any of this ““The woman you put here with me” crap. Don’t blame her for your own ignorance. Did you eat the apple?”
Adam- “Yes Suzee God, but the woman… she…”
Suzee God- “Listen to me and listen to me good. You we’re the original, you we’re here first. I told you no. YOU didn’t listen. YOU have only YOURSELF to blame. For fucks sake I made women the lesser being, I sprung her from you. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?!? Get your shit together.”
Meanwhile this shit…This shit is what really happened…
“Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.””
So Eve admitted what she had done and was punished to painful childbirth. Not only Eve but everyone of her offspring meaning EVERY WOMAN EVER, FOR EVER AND EVER. Throw in the added bonus of “Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” And it’s especially hard to understand why women aren’t seen as equals.
And what was Adam’s punishment? Basically neither him nor Eve could enter the Garden of Eden again and he had to take care of the earth from which he came.
So here’s what we learned from Adam and Eve and God:
Men came first. Men are from the earth. Animals came next. Animals are from the earth. Woman came last. Women are made from men.Women are for men.
